Albert Allwick Bowlly (7 January 1898-17 April 1941) was a South African band leader and singer. He was killed by a Luftwaffe parachute mine during World War II.
Biography[]
Al Bowlly was born on 7 January 1898 in Lourenco Marques, Portuguese Mozambique, to Greek and Lebanese parents that later moved to South Africa. He was known for songs such as "When You Wish Upon A Star", "I've Got You Under My Skin", "The Very Thought Of You", and "Love Is The Sweetest Thing", gaining him much success during the 1930s. He had 500 records over a four-year period and was considered the father of "crooning" music. In 1941, he was killed by a parachute mine from Nazi Germany's Luftwaffe during The Blitz in World War II.
