AQIM

al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) is an Islamist militant organization of al-Qaeda that was founded in 2007. It originated as the Salafist Group for Preaching and Combat, and it sought to overthrow the Algerian government and institute an Islamic state. It declared its intention to attack European and American targets, and membership was drawn from Algerians, Tuaregs, the Berabiche tribal clans of Mali, and from residents of the city suburbs of Morocco; the leadership were mainly Algerians. AQIM focused on kidnapping for ransom as a means of raising funds, raising over $50 million in ten years. On 2 March 2017, its Sahara branch merged into Jama'at Nasr al-Islam wal Muslimin.
