al-Nasir (6 August 1158-5 October 1225) was the Abbasid Caliph from 28 March 1180 to 5 October 1225, succeeding al-Mustadi and preceding az-Zahir.
Biography[]
al-Nasir was the son of al-Mustadi, and his reign as Caliph saw him attempt to restore Abbasid Caliphate to its former power. al-Nasir extended his domain from Baghdad into Mesopotamia and Persia, and he was often seen as the last effective Abbasid caliph. He consistently held Iraq from Tikrit to the Persian Gulf without interruption, and his 45-year reign was marked by ambitious and corrupt dealings with Tatar chiefs, as well as the construction of refuges for the poor, the encouragemnet of public works, and the flourishing of learning. He died in 1225.
