Biography[]
Al-Mustansir was a local of the Jerusalem region, worshiping Sunni Islam. One day in 1176, Ayyubid sultan Salah ad-Din declared jihad against the Kingdom of Jerusalem, so he raised an army of 6,800 Mutatawwi’ya (holy warriors) to fight for Jihad. In 1178 he engaged Marshall Edmund of the Knights Templar near Jerusalem at Hebron, and although he fought bravely, his forces were encircled and the weak volunteer militias were massacred. Al-Mustansir himself was among the captured, but the Templars decided to execute the captives, and Mustansir was beheaded.
