Al-Malik al-Kamel Naser al-Din Abu al-Ma'ali Muhammed (1180-1238) was the eldest son of Al-Adil and a nephew of Saladin. He was the fifth Sultan of the Ayyubid Empire that his grandfather founded in 1173, ruler from 1218 to 1238; he succeeded al-Adil and preceded al-Adil II. During his tenure as Sultan the Muslims defeated the Fifth Crusade, and the Saracens gained more land in the Sixth Crusade due to a peace treaty with Frederick II of Germany, although the Muslims gave Jerusalem to the Kingdom of Jerusalem. A year after his death, Jerusalem fell to the Ayyubids again.
