al-Fatat, also known as the Young Arab Society, was an Arab nationalist secret society which was active from 1908 to 1920 in opposition to Ottoman rule in the Levant. It was founded by Arab students in reaction to the Young Turks' seizure of power in Constantinople, and its administrative committee was founded in Paris in 1911. Originally focused on obtaining equal rights with Turks within the Ottoman Empire, al-Fatat became devoted to Arab independence following the outbreak of the Arab Revolt in 1915, as they resisted Governor Djemal Pasha's authoritarian rule. al-Fatat supported the awakening of the Arab world and the end of its admitted "backwardness", and, following the war's end in 1918, al-Fatat supported the establishment of the independent Arab Kingdom of Syria, forming the "Independence Party" as their legitimate political representation in the new nation. However, the Syrian kingdom was crushed by the French Army in the Franco-Syrian War of 1920, and Syria was once again subjected to colonial rule.
