Biography[]
Al-Aziz was the second son of Saladin, the Sultan of the Ayyubid Sultanate. Al-Aziz was a successful general under his father during the Third Crusade, becoming Governor of Arsuf Castle, and when his father died in 1193, he became the ruler of Egypt as the sultanate fragmented. His uncle Al-Afdal ruled Syria and Palestine and Al-Adil ruled Kerak and the other Ayyubid territories, and the family members warred for several years, allowing for the crusaders to recuperate from their losses in the Third Crusade. al-Aziz's death in 1198 allowed for al-Afdal to become the new ruler of the sultanate.
