
al-'As ibn Hisham ibn al-Mughira was a Quraysh warrior who fought at the 624 battle of Badr in the stead of his master Abu Lahab, to whom he was in debt for 4,000 dirhams.
Biography[]
al-'As ibn Hisham ibn al-Mughira was the brother of Abu Jahr, the fierce Quraysh ruler. He owed Abu Lahab four thousand dirhams, and he lost a bet against Abu Lahab that resulted in him becoming Abu Lahab's slave. However, the drunken Abu Lahab sent him to fight at the Battle of Badr in his stead in 624, and al-'As survived the disaster. He would return to Abu Lahab and tell him that the religion of God had won the battle, and he left Abu Lahab, who died at the thereshold of a house from his excessive drinking.
