Akkad was a city and region located in central Mesopotamia, now located between the Iraqi cities of Baghdad and Samarra. From 2334 to 2154 BC, it was the capital of the Akkadian Empire, and it lost importance when it was divided between Assyria in the north and Babylon in the south. Since the fall of the Akkadian Empire, Akkad has become a lost city.
