Aililla (839-878) was an Irish rebel leader who led an uprising against the Dyflin Norse in 878, culminating in his defeat and death at the Battle of Loch Gabhair.
Biography[]
Aililla was born in present-day County Meath, Ireland in 839, and he belonged to a Catholic Gaelic family of landowners. In 878, he began an uprising against the foreign Vikings of Dyflin, hoping to return the region to the Gaels and oust the Norse invaders. His army was met in battle by King Barid mac Imair at Loch Gabhair, where Aililla and the majority of his men were killed. Their remnants, led by Carlus, were defeated and killed further inland.
