Ailech was an Irish kingdom which existed from 425 AD, with three sons of Niall of the Nine Hostages being granted lands in former portions of Ulaid in northern Ireland. The Northern Ui Neill ruled over Ailech for centuries, and, during the 9th century, Ailech resisted the Viking invasions of Ireland. In 866, King Aed Findliath of Ailech cleared the Vikings from Cenel Eogain and Dal nAraidi, winning a battle in Lough Foyle. Ailech existed until 1185, when it became the kingdom of Tir Eoghain.
