Ahmed Suidani was the head of Syria's secret police during the late 1950s and early 1960s. Suidani served as the head of security of the Syrian colonel Amin al-Hafiz during his stay at the embassy in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and he was responsible for checking the backgrounds of every person introduced to him. In 1961, he made the acquaintance of the Mossad spy Eli Cohen, who was posing as a Syrian businessman, and he verified his background for al-Hafiz after a meticulous search. However, he never fully trusted Cohen, and he would continue to investigate him until he discovered his infiltration and had him executed in 1965. Suidani also played a major role in the 1963 Syrian coup d'etat, which led to al-Hafiz violently rising to power and deposing Nazim al-Kudsi's civilian government.
