Ahmed Qurei

Ahmed Qurei (26 March 1937-22 February 2023) was Prime Minister of the Palestinian National Authority from 7 October 2003 to 18 January 2005 (succeeding Mahmoud Abbas and preceding Nabil Shaath) and from 24 December 2005 to 29 March 2006 (succeeding Shaath and preceding Ismail Haniyeh).

Biography[]

Ahmed Qurei was born in Abu Dis, Mandatory Palestine in 1937, and he joined Fatah in 1968 and used his banking expertise to direct the PLO's foreign investments and made the PLO one of the largest employers in Lebanon. He was instrumental in negotiating the 1993 Oslo Accords with Israel, and he served as Prime Minister of the Palestinian National Authority from 2003 to 2006, briefly resigning amid violence in Gaza in 2004 and finally resigning in 2006 after Hamas won that year's legislative election. In 2012, he accused Israel of burying hopes for a two-state solution through its building of settlements in the West Bank, and he died in 2023.
