Ahmed Lutfi el-Sayed

Ahmed Lutfi el-Sayed (15 January 1872-5 March 1963) was an Egyptian nationalist, liberal, and secularist intellectual. Born in Berqin, Dakahlia Governorate in 1872, he was mentored by the liberal imam Muhammad Abduh before becoming editor-in-chief of the Al Jarida newspaper in 1907 and promoting nationalist views. After the 1906 Denshawai incident, Lutf founded the Umma Party, inspired by the views of John Stuart Mill and his radicalism. Lutfi served as director of the National Library from 1915 to 1918 and as director of the Egyptian University from 1925 to 1941, overseeing the first graduating class to include women. He served as Education and Interior Minister of Egypt during his lifetime, and he died in 1963.
