Ahmadu Bello

Ahmadu Bello (12 June 1910-15 January 1966) was Premier of Northern Nigeria from 1954 to 1966, preceding Hassan Katsina. He was a member of the Northern People's Congress.

Biography[]

Ahmadu Bello was born in Rabbah, Sokoto State, Northern Nigeria Protectorate on 12 June 1910, the grandson of Fulani Empire founder Usman Dan Fodio. He served as Sardauna of Sokoto, and he co-founded the Northern People's Congress and became Premier of the Northern Region in 1954. Upon independence in 1960, his party combined with Nnamdi Azikiwe's National Council of Nigeria and the Cameroons to control the new federal parliament, and his deputy in the NPC, Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, served as Prime Minister while Bello led the party in the north. In 1966, Bello and Balewa were assassinated during Johnson Aguiyi-Ironsi's military coup.
