The Ahmadnagar Sultanate was a medieval Indian Muslim (Sunni until 1509, Shia after 1509) kingdom that ruled the northwestern Deccan from 1490 to 1636. The sultanate was founded by Malik Ahmad Nizam Shah I after he seceded from the Bahmani Sultanate in 1490, and he initially established Junnar as its capital before founding a new capital at Ahmednagar in 1494. The sultanate bordered the Gujarat Sultanate and the Bijapur Sultanate, and it was conquered by the Mughal viceroy of Deccan, Aurangzeb, in 1636.
