Ahmad al-Ghashmi

Ahmad al-Ghashmi (1938-24 June 1978) was President of North Yemen from 1977 to 1978, succeeding Ibrahim al-Hamdi and preceding Abdul Karim Abdullah al-Arashi.

Biography[]

Ahmad al-Ghashmi was born in 1938 in the Hamadan suburb of Sana'a, Yemen. He joined the army of North Yemen after the North Yemen Civil War and led the Yemeni 1st Armored Brigade, and he was opposed to President Ibrahim al-Hamdi's attempts to reduce the influence of Saudi Arabia on Yemen. In 1977, he was elected President of North Yemen after al-Hamdi's assassination, and al-Ghashmi himself was assassinated in a briefcase bomb explosion at the General Command building on 24 June 1978.
