Ahmad Eshchi was born in Jowzjan Province, Afghanistan to an Uzbek family, and he became Governor of Jowzjan during the 2010s. He became political rivals with the Uzbek warlord Abdul Rashid Dostum, and, on 24 November 2016, he was allegedly kidnapped by Dostum's Junbish-i-Milli troops following a polo game, and Dostum was said to have ordered him stripped and raped until he bled; the Junbish soldiers were said to have shoved an AK-47 in his anus. He was held for five days before he was handed over to the Afghan security forces and then released. The International Criminal Court considered investigating Dostum for the sexual assault, which forced him to once again go into exile in Turkey; Dostum claimed that the Afghan security forces, and not his own Junbish men, were responsible for Eshchi's kidnapping and torture.
