Agis II-0

Agis II (457-401 BC) was King of Sparta from 426 to 401 BC, succeeding Archidamus II and preceding Agesilaus II.

Biography[]

Agis was born in 457 BC, the son of Archidamus II and the half-brother of Agesilaus II. He succeeded his father by the summer of 426 BC, and, that summer, he attempted an invasion of Attica amid the Peloponnesian War, although he was forced to retreat by a series of earthquakes. In 425, he attempted another invasion of Attica, but he withdrew after 15 days. In 418 BC, he won a decisive victory over the Delian League at Mantinea, and, from 413 to 404 BC, he encamped at Decelea. After the war's end, he failed to have his co-king Pausanias convicted of treason, and he died of illness in 401 BC.
