Agenor the Barbarous (475-429 BC) was the Exiled Captain of the Pirate Islands from 431 to 429 BC. He was an Athenian ally during the Peloponnesian War, and he was assassinated by the Spartan mercenary Kassandra in 429 BC.
Biography[]
Agenor the Barbarous claimed he was raised on the battlefield and that the first thing he held was a spear. Like most people who make their identity about one thing, Agenor was never seen as more than a warrior.
During the Peloponnesian War, he was installed as the Athenian puppet ruler of the Pirate Islands from Koressia Fort on Keos. In 429 BC, the Spartan mercenary Kassandra infiltrated Koressia Fort with the goal of assassinating Agenor and weakening the Athenians on Keos. Kassandra assassinated his strategos Hiero and several of his bodyguards before luring Agenor into a ruined hut and murdering him.
