Agapenor in battle

Agapenor was King of Arcadia during the early 12th century BC.

Biography[]

Agapenor was the son of Ancaeus and a grandson of Lycurgus, and he was King of Arcadia at the time of the Trojan War. He led 60 shiploads of Arcadian warriors to Troy in 1193 BC, as he was once a suitor of Helen and was thus bound by the Oath of Tyndareus to defend her chosen husband Menelaus. Agapenor was one of the men to be in the Trojan Horse in 1183 BC, and, during his return trip to Greece, he was shipwrecked on Cyprus, where he founded the town of Paphos and a temple fo Aphrodite.
