The Afrikaner Weerstandsbeweging (AWB) is a white supremacist and neo-Nazi political party in South Africa. The party was founded by Eugène Terre'Blanche in 1973 in reaction to Prime Minister John Vorster's "liberal" view of racial issues in the white-minority country, and the AWB drew most of its early membership from the far-right Herstigte Nasionale Party. The AWB came to have thousands of members by the 1980s, claiming to have the support of up to 7% of white South Africans by 1988. The AWB engaged in political violence in the leadup to the country's first multiracial election in 1994, but it lost support after its awkward involvement in the 1994 Bophuthatswana crisis. During the 2000s, the AWB used social media to recruit new members, claiming 5,000 members in 2008. After Terre'Blanche's murder in 2010, Steyn von Rönge became the new leader of the AWB.
