Afrika Korps

The Deutsches Afrika Korps (DAK) was an expeditionary force sent by Nazi Germany to North Africa to assist their ally of Italy in the struggle against the United Kingdom in Libya during World War II. The Afrika Korps, led by "the Desert Fox" Erwin Rommel, consisted mostly of panzer divisions and fought a long campaign from 1941 to 1943 to defend North Africa from the Allied Powers. It invaded Egypt in 1942 and threatened the Suez Canal until it was defeated at the Second Battle of El Alamein; Rommel fell ill and Hans-Jurgen von Arnim led the corps until it surrendered at Cape Bon in May 1943 in Tunisia.
