African nationalism is a political ideology in Africa that supports national self-determination and the creation of nation states. The ideology developed during the period of European colonial rule during the 19th and 20th centuries, and its views represented "positive nationalism", supporting majority rule in white-ruled countries, as well as decolonization. The ideology was the driving force behind the campaigns of the Kenya African National Union, the African National Congress, and the Democratic Party of Guinea. The movement would later inspire the Black Power movement worldwide as an extension of its ideals to the diaspora.
