The African Methodist Episcopal Church (AME Church) is an African-American Methodist church that was founded in 1816 by Richard Allen in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The church rapidly expanded its membership among both free and enslaved African-Americans, and it provided spiritual direction for African-Americans across the United States. The church allowed for African-Americans to represent themselves in religion, and the church had 2,500,000 members in 2016.
