Affonso I of Portugal (born 1061) was the King of Portugal from 1164.
Biography[]
Affonso was the son of King Henrique I of Portugal and Teresa of Portugal and Navarre, and was a religiously proper and intelligent prince. As the eldest child of the couple, he was the heir apparent to the Kingdom of Portugal and Navarre, and he conquered much of southern Spain from the Moors to add more lands to the Christian Portuguese nation. In 1164 he acceded to the throne of Portugal and became the King of Portugal and Navarre in addition to inheriting the titles of Duke of Aquitaine and Brittany, Count of Zaragoza, King of Cordoba and Granada, and Lord of Egypt.
