Aethelweard (876-16 October 922) was the younger son of King Alfred the Great and Ealhswith.
Biography[]
Aethelweard was born in 876, the younger son of King Alfred the Great and Queen Ealhswith of Wessex and the younger sibling of Aethelflaed and Edward the Elder. He was educated in both Latin and Old English and was instructed in the liberal arts from a young age, and, through his father's patronage, he went on to become a wealthy landowner. He came to own Arreton (Isle of Wight), East Dean (West Sussex), Meon (Hampshire), Amesbury (Wiltshire), West Dean (Wiltshire), Sturminster Marshall (Dorset), Yeovil (Somerset), Crewkerne (Somerset), Whitchurch Canonicorum (Dorset), Axmouth (Devon), Branscombe (Devon), Cullompton (Devon), Tiverton (Devon), Mylenburnan (Devon), Exminster (Devon), Sutheswyrthe (Devon), Lifton (Devon), and all of his father's property in Cornwall. He died on 16 October 922 and was buried in Winchester; his brother was buried next to him two years later.
