Aethelwald Moll

Aethelwald Moll (730-30 October 765) was King of Northumbria from 5 August 759 to 30 October 765, succeeding Oswulf of Northumbria and preceding Alhred of Northumbria.

Biography[]

Aethelwald Moll was born to a powerful noble family in Northumbria, and King Eadberht of Northumbria granted the Yorkshire monasteries of Stonegrave, Coxwold, and Donaemuthe to him. In 759, on Oswulf's murder, Aethelwald Moll was crowned King of Northumbria, and he slew the prince Oswine in battle in the Eildon Hills in 761. He was deposed and tonsured in 765, and he died later that year. His son Aethelred of Northumbria later became king.
