Aethelstan of Kent

Aethelstan of Kent (824-852) was King of Kent from 839 to 852, succeeding Aethelwulf of Wessex and preceding Aethelbert of Wessex.

Biography[]

Aethelstan was the eldest son of Aethelwulf of Wessex and Osburh, and, when Aethelwulf became King of Wessex in 839, he appointed Aethelstan to rule over Kent, Essex, Surrey, and Sussex. In 851, he defeated a Viking fleet off Sandwich in the first naval battle in recorded English history. He died in 852.
