Aethelmund of Carlea (850-895) was a Mercian ealdorman during the late 9th century.
Biography[]
Aethelmund was born in 850 to a family of Anglo-Saxon Catholic nobles, and he became the Ealdorman of Carlea under Lord Aethelred of Mercia. In 885, he raised his fyrd to protect Mercia from Viking attacks, and he defeated a sizable Danish raiding force in the Battle of Atherstone, saving the capital of Tamworth from assault. Aethelmund was commended by Aethelred for his role in protecting Mercia, and he continued to fend off Viking raids across Watling Street until his death from fever in 895.
