Aethelfrid the Jeweler (834-) was a West Saxon jeweler who lived in Winchester during the late 9th century AD. In 877, he was commissioned to create a precious jewel for King Alfred the Great depicting Jesus, but the process of creating the jewel cost him more than he had been paid, causing him to refuse to hand over the jewel to Alfred's courtier Cedric unless he was paid more. The Viking warrior Eivor Wolf-Kissed resolved the dispute by breaking into Aethelfrid's house and convincing him that it would be suicidal to defy King Alfred, and Aethelfrid gave him the jewel; Eivor then handed over the jewel to a grateful and surprised Cedric, although he boasted that he would soon take it, and all of Wessex, from Alfred.
