Aethelbert of Wessex (836-865) was the king of Wessex from 860 to 865, succeeding Aethelbald of Wessex and preceding Aethelred of Wessex.
Biography[]
Aethelbert of Wessex was born in 836 to Aethelwulf of Wessex and Osburga. He succeeded his brother Aethelbald of Wessex as king of Wessex in 860 when he died childless, and he was crowned at Kingston-Upon-Thames. Internally, his reign was one of good harmony and lasting peace, but the Vikings ravaged eastern Kent and captured Winchester. In 865, he died childless, and Aethelred of Wessex succeeded him as king.
