Aemund

Aemund (859-882) was King of Nordmann during the 9th century, preceding Olafr of Nordmann. He was killed at the Battle of Southampton while launching an invasion of southern England in 882.

Biography[]

Aemund was born in Norway in 859, and he became a Viking sea king and the leader of a small raiding fleet of Nordmann warriors at a young age. In 881, he decided to lead a raiding expedition in the British Isles, invading England via Hampshire on its southern coast. King Alfred the Great of Wessex sent his general Aelfwald with his fyrd to confront the invaders shortly after they captured and sacked Southampton. The ensuing Battle of Southampton saw Aemund and his army suffer a catastrophic defeat, with Aemund and all but 15 of his men being slain or captured. Thorfinn the Northman and the 15 remaining Norwegian soldiers were then hunted down and annihilated near Hythe, and Aemund's successor Olafr of Nordmann was deprived of his English holdings when Aelfwald retook Southampton.
