Aella of Deira (540-588) was King of Deira from 580 to 588, preceding Aethelric of Deira.
Biography[]
Aella was born in 540, and he became a leader of the Germanic Angles. He became the leader of an Anglian warband which, in 559, conquered parts of the northern English coast controlled by Ebrauc and founded the kingdom of Deira. In 580, Aella conquered York from Gwrgant Gwron, bringing an end to Ebrauc and becoming the first King of Deira. Aella reigned as king from 580 to 588, when he was succeeded by his son Aethelric of Deira.
