Prince Aelfweard

Aelfweard of Wessex (902-2 August 924) was King of Wessex from 17 July to 2 August 924, succeeding Edward the Elder and preceding Aethelstan.

Biography[]

Aelfweard was born in Wessex, England in 902, the son of King Edward the Elder and Queen Aelfflaed. He was his father's de facto heir until his child from his first (unrecognized) marriage to Ecgwynn, Aethelstan, was legitimized, leading to a succession crisis on Edward's death in 924. Aelfweard was recognized as King in Wessex, while Aethelstan was recognized as King in Mercia, and only Aelfweard's death 16 days later prevented a civil war.
