Aelflaed Ealdredsdohtor (1023-1055) was the wife of Duncan I of Scotland and the mother of Malcolm III of Scotland and Donald III of Scotland.
Biography[]
Aelflaed was the daughter of a man named Ealdred, and she came from the House of Bamburgh, a dynasty of Catholic Anglo-Saxons. Aelflaed was the niece of Earl Siward of Northumbria. She married King Duncan I of Scotland, bearing him three sons: Malcolm III of Scotland, Donald III of Scotland, and Earl Malmure of Atholl. In 1040, her husband was murdered and Macbeth of Scotland became the new king, so she fled with her sons. In 1054, she persuaded the Kingdom of England to invade Scotland, and in 1057 Malcolm became the king of Scotland after slaying Macbeth and Lulach of Scotland, Macbeth's son.
