The Aegean Sea is a sea located north of the Mediterranean Sea and to the southwest of the Sea of Marmara. Named for Aegea, the queen of the Amazons who died at sea, the Aegean Sea is home to several islands possessed by Greece and Turkey, including Crete and Rhodes. The sea has a surface area of 83,000 square miles.
