The Aedui were a Gallic people who inhabited the area around Bibracte in northern Gallia Lugdunensis (now Autun, Burgundy, France). The Aedui were honored with the titles of brothers and kinsmen of the Roman people for their alliance with the Roman Republic, and the tribe became hereditary rivals with the Sequani tribe and their Suebi allies. Julius Caesar began his Gallic Wars with the goal of protecting the Aedui from Germanic invasions, and they fought alongside the Romans; however, they took part in Vercingetorix's Gallic revolt. The tribe later returned to being a Roman ally, and tribesmen were granted the ability to become Roman senators by Emperor Claudius as a part of jus honorum. The Aedui would adopt the Roman governmental structure, and they were assimilated into Roman society.
