Adonijah Strong Welch (12 April 1821-14 March 1889) was a Republican US Senator from Florida from 17 June 1868 to 4 March 1869, succeeding Stephen Mallory and preceding Abijah Gilbert.
Biography[]
Adonijah Strong Welch was born in East Hampton, Connecticut in 1821, and he moved to Jonesville, Michigan in 1839 and became a lawyer and school principal (from 1851 to 1865). In 1865, he moved to Pensacola, Florida and later to Jacksonville, and he served as a Republican US Senator from 1868 to 1869. Rather than accept renomination, he instead chose to serve as the first president of the Iowa State Agricultural College from 1869 to 1883, and he died in 1889.
