Adolfo de la Huerta (26 May 1881 – 9 July 1955) was President of Mexico from 1 June to 30 November 1920, succeeding Venustiano Carranza and preceding Alvaro Obregon.
Biography[]
Adolfo de la Huerta was born on 26 May 1881 in Guaymas, Mexico, the grandson of an immigrant from Granada, Spain. In 1896, he attended the National Prepatory School in Mexico City, and he joined the Mexican Liberal Party ten years later. In 1909, he joined the Anti-Reelectionist Party to oppose Porfirio Diaz's dictatorship, and he became Governor of Sonora in 1916 during the Mexican Revolution. He led the Agua Prieta revolution, which deposed Venustiano Carranza, leading to him being promoted to interim President on 1 June 1920. Pancho Villa and his army surrendered to the De la Huerta government, and he became Secretary of Finance under Alvaro Obregon when he became President of Mexico. However, he was angry that Obregon chose Plutarco Elias Calles as his successor, so he led a 1924 uprising against Obregon. It was crushed, and De la Huerta fled to Los Angeles, California in the United States. He would later return to Mexico and die in 1955.
