Adolfo Ballivian (15 November 1831-14 February 1874) was President of Bolivia from 9 May 1873 to 14 February 1874, interrupting Tomas Frias' terms.
Biography[]
Adolfo Ballivian was born in La Paz, Bolivia in 1831, the son of Jose Ballivian. He was highly educated, becoming an orator, composer, and writer while also serving in the Bolivian Army. Ballivian served as Jose Maria Linares' aide-de-camp before being exiled from the country after Mariano Melgarejo's coup in 1864. He returned to Bolivia on the death of President Agustin Morales in 1871 and was elected President in 1873, and a global drop in silver prices plagued his term, as did a deterioration in relations with Chile after Ballivian began to rebuild the Bolivian Navy. He died of stomach cancer in 1874.
