Aden Adde

Aden Abdulle Osman Daar (9 December 1908-8 June 2007), better known as Aden Adde, was President of Somalia from 1 July 1960 to 6 July 1967, preceding Abdirashid Shermarke. He was a member of the Somali Youth League.

Biography[]

Aden Abdulle Osman Daar was born in Beledweyne, Italian Somaliland in 1908, and he rose through the ranks of the Somali Youth League before becoming chair of its Beledweyne branch in 1946, Chairman of the National Legislative Assembly, and Leader of the SYL, becoming a prominent nationalist leader. He served as Somalia's first President from 1960 to 1967, when he was defeated for re-election by his former Prime Minister Abdirashid Shermarke. In 1990, during the Somali Civil War, Aden signed a manifesto calling for reconciliation and an end to the violence, and he was imprisoned by Siad Barre's regime until its overthrow a year later. He then retired to his farm in Janale, and he died in Nairobi, Kenya in 2007 at the age of 98.
