Adelchis of Lombardy (759-1 December 781) was the King of Lombardy from 774 to 781, succeeding Desiderius of Lombardy and preceding Lupus of Lombardy.
Biography[]
Adelchis was born in 759 to King Desiderius of Lombardy and Ansia of Lombardy, and he was from the House of Alachisling. He succeeded his father on his death and became the new king of Lombardy (present-day Italy), a powerful nation that spanned from the Alps to the north down to Calabria in the south. His dominion was threatened by the Republic of Venice, which took over Trieste in 774 and proceeded to take over the whole of Istria and Aquileia in the following years. He was known to be a resolute king, and he would not surrender until several defeats eventually persuaded him to make peace. In 781 he waged war against Venice again when King Tassilo III of Bavaria invaded Venice, but Adelchis and Grand Mayor Ademaro of Genoa were both captured in battle. While Ademaro was released, Doge Giovanni of Venice, angry at the cynical and obstinate Adelchis, had him executed.
