Adekunle Fajuyi (26 June 1926-29 July 1966) was the Military Governor of Western Nigeria from 15 January to 29 July 1966, preceding Robert Adeyinka Adebayo.
Biography[]
Adekunle Fajuyi was born on 26 June 1926 in Ado Ekiti, Nigeria, and he joined the British Army in 1943. He helped to contain a mutiny in his unit over food rations and was awarded the British Empire Medal in 1951 as a reward, and in 1961 he led the Queen's Own Nigeria Regiment during the Congo Crisis, extracting his unit from an ambush in North Katanga and being awarded the Military Cross. In January 1966, he was posted to Abeokuta as garrison commander and was appointed military governor of Western Nigeria by President Johnson Aguiyi-Ironsi. On 29 July 1966, mutinous Nigerian Army soldiers executed Fajuyi and Ironsi at Fajuyi's house in Ibadan in the July Counter Coup.
