Acragas

Acragas was a Greek city-state in Magna Graecia in what is now Agrigento, Sicily, Italy. Acragas was founded in 580 BC by Greek colonists from Gela, and it became one of the richest and most famous Greek colonies, growing to 200,000 people. The city remained neutral during the Peloponnesian War, but it was sacked by Carthage in 406 BC. The city was disputed between Rome and Carthage during the Punic Wars, and the Romans captured it in 261 BC and sold the population into slavery. The final peace settlement ceded the city to Rome.
