The Achaeans were one of the four major Greek tribes during the classical era. They were named for Achaeus, the son of Xuthus and the brother of Ion, the father of the Ionians, and they originally lived in Argolis and Laconia. In 1200 BC, the invasion of the Dorians forced the Achaeans to migrate into the land of the Ionians, whom they forced to flee to Asia Minor after taking over their lands. The Achaean homeland became known as Achaea, and they went on to found Croton in southern Italy in 710 BC.
