Abu al-Hasan al-Hashimi al-Qurashi (31 January 1980 - 15 October 2022), born Nour Karim al-Mutni, was Caliph of the Islamic State from 10 March to 15 October 2022, succeeding Abu Ibrahim al-Hashimi al-Qurayshi and preceding Abu al-Hussein al-Husseini al-Qurashi.
Biography[]
Nour Karim al-Mutni was born in Rawa, Iraq, and he belonged to the Bu Owaid tribe of Anbar Governorate. His brother and seven of his relatives were kidnapped and killed by Shia militias during the Iraq War, and he participated in the anti-American insurgency before becoming an ISIL operative in Baghdad in 2014. In 2022, the shura council of the Islamic State named al-Mutni as Caliph, and he succeeded to the caliphate as "Abu al-Hasan al-Hashimi al-Qurashi". On 26 May 2022 he was reportedly arrested in Istanbul, Turkey, although the captured ISIL leader was revealed to be Bashar Khattab Ghazal al-Sumaidai on 8 September 2022; al-Qurashi remained at large. In October 2022, Free Syrian Army rebels tracked Abu al-Hasan down to Daraa Governorate, where he blew himself up rather than be captured; his death was formally announced on 30 November 2022.
