Abu Muhsin al-Masri

Abu Muhsin al-Masri (1958-24 October 2020), born Husam Abd-al-Ra'uf, was an al-Qaeda leader who served as the second-in-command of General Emir Ayman al-Zawahiri until his death in an Afghan government raid in Ghazni Province in 2020 during the Afghanistan War.

Biography[]

Husam Abd-al-Ra'uf was born in Egypt in 1958, and he became a Salafist and a high-ranking al-Qaeda leader during the late 20th century. Following Osama Bin Laden's death, he was believed to have risen to be al-Qaeda's second-in-command under General Emir Ayman al-Zawahiri, and, on 27 December 2018, the US District Court for the Southern District of New York issued a warrant for his arrest for his terrorist activities. On 24 October 2020, he was killed in an Afghan National Directorate of Security operation in Ghazni Province.
