Abu Dhar al-Ghifari (died 652) was a sahabi of Muhammad.
Biography[]
Abu Dhar al-Ghifari was a monotheist even before his conversion to Islam, and he lived a poor and modest life as a shepherd while his tribe lived by pillaging caravans. He traveled to Mecca to meet Muhammad, hoping to meet the new prophet, and he proclaimed his faith in front of the pagan Ka'aba shrine. Abu Dhar was severely beaten as a result, and in 622 he joined Muhammad when he arrived in Medina, becoming a very early convert (perhaps the fourth). He fought as a sahabi, and his own son was killed on an expedition against the pagans. Abu Dhar died in 652, twenty years after Muhammad, having been exiled to Syria by Uthman due to disagreements.
