Abu Dhar Azzam

Abu Dhar Azzam was a Rohingya Islamist cleric and a member of the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan.

Biography[]

Abu Dhar Azzam was born in Rakhine State, Myanmar to a Sunni Muslim Rohingya family, and he worked as a cleric in Karachi, Pakistan before joining the insurgency in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas. He became a prominent member of the Turkistan Islamic Party, Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan, and the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan, and he became an IMU spokesman. He was sympathetic to his fellow Rohingya, supporting them during the 2012 riots in Rakhine, and he also supported the Boston Marathon bombing. Azzam was also briefly affiliated with the Islamic State.
